You may want to believe that it is just drawn right on the wall

There are very few other projects where the possibilities are as many as when an old apartment is to be refurbished. Visible dragons, walled walls and open floors, just mention it and you will find an apartment that has just made it. And sometimes there has not been an apartment once, but something completely different.

The Swedish architect Anders Martin-Löf has designed this apartment in Vasastan, Stockholm, dating from the early 1900s.

He started the entire project with a thorough analysis of the apartment’s history and spatial qualities.

– The assignment from the owners was to combine the small apartment with the ceiling over. The difficulty with this was that the ceiling was so small and had a roof roof instead of seat roof, explains Martin-Löf.

Stairway to heaven

The apartment in one of Stockholm’s most venerable districts goes over two levels. In the first it is about giving, on the floor above it is enjoyed. And between them runs a staircase.

Black and mysterious. Like a stretch.

– The inspiration for the staircase is derived from Chinese lacquers, describes Martin-Löf.

In front of it, it appears as if it was just drawn right on the wall. And if you take a little side of it, you get no impression that it’s a staircase that leads to a certain place.

But hidden behind a large tiled stove, the stairs make a bang and lead into the sky, closest to.

Up and down, they are in line and row, the rooms that bring you from the reality of the dreams. And in between lies the cleansing; the bathroom with the round bath and the black and white interior.

– Many claimed that the ceiling was impossible to accommodate due to the limited size. But with the help of smart solutions, planning and great faith that it will go, succeeds Martin-Löf.

The result was a ceiling of 32 m2 and an apartment of 30 m2.

Clean lines

What characterizes the entire apartment is the high ceiling, which creates a clear sense of space and the possibility of opulence. If you get tempted.

But neither the architect nor the owners did. It’s the clean and simple interior that gives the apartment its qualities and personality.

From the ceiling there hangs a simple lamp where once a big chandelier could hang. And on the floor is a small television set, almost like an art installation.

On the walls there is almost no thing, only one reading lamp on one wall and one bookcase on the other.

Black and White

Only two colors are used throughout the apartment, black and white. It creates clear contrasts and emphasizes the almost graphic expression in the interior.

That way, the apartment becomes virtually uncompromising. Black or White. Soft or hard.

But in the contrast-filled, it is also aesthetic.

Architectural grip

Architect Anders Martin-Löf has been very aware of what action he would take with the apartment. The staircase leading up to the ceiling appears to be the most significant. Strictly speaking, a staircase should have a handrail, but a railing would have destroyed the appearance completely.

Another step was to place the bath in the second floor on top of the stairs, so you can walk from the floor below and rise straight up in the bathtub, which is round and dressed in white mosaic tiles.
