Many villagers worldwide complain about expensive prices and small impractical housing. But luckily there are also many examples that little can be smart too.

Increasing housing prices and increased urbanization force both architects, designers and residents to think outside the box.

According to the design and architecture site Homedesign, this Barcelona apartment is a great example of how to live small and smart.

Here the owner must regularly unfold the rooms as he needs them.

The house owner, photographer Christian Schallert, explains to the American website that both he and architect Barbara Appolloni became inspired by space-saving furniture and decor found on board boats as they planned his new one-room.

– Clean lines and tight designs, often seen in Japanese homes and architecture, were also a source of inspiration, Schallert explains in a video posted on Youtube.

This is how the apartment works

When you enter the small apartment in the center of Barcelona, it initially looks like a rather empty, narrow room. But this is only when the owner, Christian Schallert, does not sleep, cook, dress or eat. Because when he begins to pull out drawers and open cabinet doors, the apartment is completely changed.

Christian Schallert can spell out all the rooms he needs in his mini-apartment.

The bed is in a drawer under the balcony. The dining table goes down from the wall. And the cabinets on the wall hide a whole kitchen.

When Schallert needs a room or furniture, he simply has to build it together. The apartment has been given the appropriate nickname “Lego Apartment”.

TV: Swivel out of a niche in the wall and can be angled so you can watch TV from the bed.

Dining table: When Christian is going to eat, he must lower the table top from the wall. This then uses a flower box like a table leg, and the stairs up to the balcony will be seated at the table.

Kitchen: Hidden behind cupboard doors, the smart, fully-equipped kitchen is located. Here is the stove, dishwasher, sink, kitchen sink and microwave. Full size fridge and freezer cabinets are easy and convenient in the closet next door.

The small apartment, which was nothing but a cargo in an old city center in Barcelona’s hip district, Born, measures only a minimum of 22 square meters – but is equally functional as the home of photographer Christian Schallert.

The plan solution is absolutely brilliant

Architect Barbara Appolloni explains:

– We had to adjust and strengthen the inner walls to withstand the new structure, the wall with all the cabinets. It was also a big but important job to turn the roof outside into a large and practical terrace. This serves as an additional living / living area when the owner has a visit or just needs space and air.

For Homedesign, says Apolloni:

– The interior of the apartment is versatile and functional. The accommodation can be used in many ways and for all needs and purposes. The only items that are visible at all times are the shower room and the sink.

The walls of the apartment are dressed with plates that are the admixture of a mixture of wood particles and cement, which is again supported by a hidden structure made of wood. The ceiling and the cabinet wall are made of plywood.

Should you have narrower houses, you have to sleep upright

– The wall and furniture allow for large variations in storage, this applies to both the wardrobe, the kitchen and the bathroom, explains architect Barbara Appolloni.

The cabinets that hide the bed are divided into three moving parts, all hidden under a new balcony floor, which was built above the original floor and also serves as a bench / couch / storage space and staircase to the terrace.
