To get the daylight into it, a three-story glass facade was built.
Older buildings that no longer fill the function it originally had, are either demolished, or given a whole new life.
This water tower in the Netherlands was drained for water and filled up with a modern interior, spread over nine floors.
The tower’s façade was almost closed, so there was no connection with the green area around, and because the façade was almost closed, there was no light either. An important part of the rebuilding was therefore to improve the light and strengthen the connection with the garden, “says architects Marnix van der Meer and Rolf Bruggink in Zecc Architects.. no.
Historic Water Tower
Built the house into an old church
The water tower has been marked in the Dutch landscape. From the 1850s around 260 were built, and still 175 are upright. A few of them still have their original function, while many are converted to restaurants, offices, homes, hotels and museums..
– The water tower in Soest is a relatively young monument and is characterized by a clear and pure architectural form and a minimal detail. The tower was redeemed for its original function in 2002 and its lower parts have since functioned as office lockers, describing the architects.
Water tank like sky
The tower showed that it was poorly maintained for many years, among other places there were clear cracks in the brick facade, and the iron used in the construction had clear corrosion damage.
Placed house on stilts
In addition, the top of the water tank, which was in the upper part of the tower, was removed. When Zecc Architects got the task in 2002, therefore, there were significant tasks ahead of them. But at the same time the goal was to keep the most of the tower’s original feel.
One of the challenges was therefore to maintain the industrial expression in the interior and to maintain space, explains Van der Meer and Rolf Bruggink.
Among other things, the bottom of the tower was the bottom of the water tank as a ceiling.
The architects shared the tower in relation to the residents’ daily rhythm, so that in the lower part were the rooms placed which are mainly used during the day. This avoided unnecessary use of stairs.
– In this section the kitchen, the living room and the children’s bedrooms were placed and they are oriented towards the street and the garden. Just below the bottom of the old water tank we placed the bathroom to emphasize the connection to the tower’s original function.
They should only build a garage.
In the upper part there is a working room, parlor, sauna and reading room.
In this way, parents can retreat in the evening, telling the architects.
Keep the most of the original
In order to maintain the tower as much as possible in a sustainability perspective, it was necessary to undertake material engineering. Among other things, the rusted iron was removed, preventing the formation of sprains in the façade.
– In replacement, a new, internal cosmic extrusion consisting of new floors and a spiral staircase that moves from the bottom to the top, was built, says Van der Meer and Rolf Bruggink.
This is the same house
For this work, Zecc Architects was awarded the Dutch Watertower Prize for 2004.
The original character of the tower was refined through the new use of the water tower, thus creating a whole new situation that has built a quality that is constantly growing, “the jury writes in its statement.
