Architects are predominantly guilty of clients giving them assignments. The architects Todd Saunders and Tommie Wilhelmsen turned their heads on their heads and became their own principals.

The result became a very special cabin in Hardanger, almost like a box that has been carefully placed in the terrain.

– Instead of looking for clients, we hunted a possible place to travel our project. We found it at the Hardangerfjord and bought it for the rest of our savings. That way, we were given the opportunity to follow our architectural visions. They are about a uncompromising and original architecture where respect for the landscape is deeply rooted, they explain.

The cabin is twenty square meters high and builds on a clear principle that it should be as small as possible for its environment.

Therefore it is placed on pillars, and the plate that stretches out on both sides is built around the trees.

– We wanted to design a building that was in keeping with the surroundings, describes Tommie Wilhelmsen.

– But we also felt that such a romantic environment as the Hardangerfjord is in many ways needed a fresh and easy form expression.

– It’s a little piece of furniture, complements Todd Saunders.

Icon

The cabin became an icon for Saunders and Wilhelmsen’s architectural activities (they have divorced teams now). From Argentina, there were inquiries.

For the Wilhelmsen the cabin formed much of the basis for what he has drawn since.

– It has become a reference project for me.

Clean building technology, the cabin is a traditional construction. It is built in travel works and covered with lerk exterior and veneer insides.
