Built the house into an old church

On Whidbey Island, Washington, USA, the SHED design agency has built an old barn to become a gathering place and an activity venue for both the family and friends of the customer.

All rooms were developed with minimal use of materials, and with extensive reuse of old materials from the barn.

The customer, an old lady in the 70’s, had moved closer to her two daughters to retire and bought a large plot of house, barn and several other buildings, telling Prentis Hale from SHED to click. no.

She wanted to renovate the barn to have a retreat for her two daughters, and future grandchildren.

From beginning to end

The project itself ran between 1999 and 2001, and SHED has stood for everything from planning to completion of both exterior and interior.

– Requirements for the customer were both simple and complicated, explains Prentis. The customer and the daughters wanted to change the barn to both a family place and a common place. They therefore wanted three different solutions:

1. A large and shared room with kitchen for both private use of the family and common events. Here, cheese and other products from the farm were to be sold at the local market.

2. A private apartment on the second floor for the use of her daughters and guests.

3. A dormitory with shared bathroom for grandchildren or other guests. The husband of one of the daughters was a teacher and often took his students there on a weekend trip. It has also been used for both weddings and other events.

The designers lived on site much of the period the barn was restored. It was important for SHED that each part of the barn should have its own character by using natural light and the location in the landscape.

The barn should also be restored with few materials and a lot of reuse of old materials. Some of the reuse meant that the outer walls of the barn were used as an indoor panel and that old floorboards were used for stairs and worktops.

New cedars were used for the fa├žade, which should fire and shine over the years.

– We removed all of the exterior facade, stored it and used it throughout the interior, explains Prentis.

It was mainly used in the dormitory, the bathrooms and the private apartment.

In fact, we ran out of materials and had to get out an old fence that went around the plot to complete the kitchen.

CONTRASTER: The rustic and weathery walls give a tough contrast to the modern furniture. Photo: Jenny Elia Pfeiffer

Indoors, they chose to place the panel horizontally, to emphasize that the old walls enveloped the interior. Outdoors were laid vertically.

GREAT WINDOWS: Much access to natural light was important for the designers in SHED Photo: Jenny Elia Pfeiffer

It was SHED that stood for all of the interior and exterior, as well as furniture and lighting.

– But I wish we were better lighting designers at that time, finishing Prentis. The large windows emit well with light, but the lighting itself should be better planned.
