Extreme transformation of old villa

Architecture still finds new forms, and Japanese architecture has been good at creating new and surprising expressions. This time, the architectural office y + M design has created a whole house that is shaped like a solid staircase.

“The owner of the house had three wishes for the house,” explains the architects to the site Dezeen. “They wanted the house to be a gathering place for your students (the owners are teachers), in addition, it should be warm and bright and ultimately it should protect their private sphere”.

The result was this house that is staircase both inside and out.

Light & Privacy

When you stand outside the stairwell, the insight is limited. Nevertheless, a lot of light does not get into the house because window slits are inserted between the outside steps..

“The windows are designed and positioned so that they glide in the most possible light, while maintaining the private sphere,” writes Dezeen.

Exterior as Inside

The exterior staircase of the house is brought into the interior, so that it moves upwards from floor to ceiling along a sloping line.

Among other things, there is a bookshelf placed along one long wall, with a staircase running parallel so that you almost get the feeling of being in a public library.

Protection against the climate

The house is located by the sea. In the winter there will be a cold win striking from the fjord, and in addition the days are short.

The architects have therefore designed the house to maximize the sunlight, as well as fire and heat.

Universal design

The staircase makes people automatically look upwards, “explains the architects of Dezeen, explaining that the stairs are of porcelain so that the fa├žade becomes maintenance free.

And the architects believe that with this construction, they have created a building that can work under all climatic conditions.
