It is not exactly the fluffiest of good and spacious plots in big cities – at least not that within the financial reach of most. Many people have to thank you for living less and tighter than they might really dream about while others choose to move out of town and sacrifice it to be in the midst of the butter island in favor of more rooms and bigger space.

But for some, none of the parts is a good option and you are forced to look at other solutions again to get the home you dream about on the place you have available.

Built in height

According to the design and architecture site Dezeen, this client came to the architects of ALPHAville with a challenge: Help them create a home with plenty of space on a plot that would not indicate that this was possible.

The site, enclosed in a densely populated area of ​​Kyoto, Japan, measured only barely 47 m2, and was initially rather dark due to little access to daylight between other buildings already in place.

– Here we had to think again, explains architect Kentaro Takeguchi to the Designboom website.

This can solve the housing crisis in the cities

– We planned to build in the height to take advantage of the land to the maximum, and when it was decided, we had to make the house the best way to work on the residents.

The building, as the architects have baptized, W-Window House, is quite enclosed between other buildings, and one of the challenges the architects faced above was to provide both enough daylight to the home and also the opportunity to provide for airflow.

Rotated the house on the page

From the street side, W-Window House looks pretty close. The building is clad in steel plates, and the architects chose to avoid windows on the front of the house, and also focus on light and view from the sides of the house.

– By adding the windows to the sides of the house, we got the best use of daylight, explains architect Asako Yamamoto.

Now you can enjoy the sunlight that moves through the day from east to west, and the breeze blowing through the house from bottom to top, while the noise from the street and the neighborhood is almost invisible from the inside of the house.

On both sides of the house, the architects have called “light wells”, which in practice are large slanted windows that extend from the first floor upwards along the long sides of the house.

– The windows are stacked on top of each other, Yamamoto explains to the design and architectural site Arch Daily.

Here there was a ceiling

– This means that from the inside of the house you do not look directly onto either street or other buildings, but rather up to the sky and down to the terraces and gardens in the neighborhood.

On the ground, these “lightning hunting” form on two terraces.

– From this the light is transmitted deeper into the house, explains Yamamoto.

– The fact that despite the lack of windows on the front and back of the house, the interior here is certainly not as cramped or dark.

Floors and Half-Floors

To maximize the height of the house, the architects could use a system of floors and mesanines.

– These are all tied together by the staircase, which is made of a piece of folded steel, explains architect Takeguchi.

– The staircase has a white surface, which in turn helps to send the light around the house, while the underside of the staircase is painted black, which creates an exciting contrast in an otherwise tight indoor environment.

Up the floor, the house extends 7 meters high.

Depending on the level of the interior, the inside of the house looks quite different, which contributes to the feeling of flow and movement, the architect believes.

Clearly you can plant the tree in the living room floor

– You can also see the openings of the different rooms when standing on the various mezzanines.

The house, which measures a total of 72 m2 in living space, has two floors on the sides of the dwelling facing the road on each side and three floors on the windows sides.

– Each room is tied together, but also partly hidden by the wind chases, explains Takeguchi.

– This “waist” on the house actually adds a lot of depth to the home.

Anonymous outside, unique inside

The architects explain that for the family there was a desire to shield the inside of the house from as much noise from the street as possible.

– The solution was to drop windows all the way from the sides facing the street, explains Takeguchi.

– Kyoto is a very densely populated city, and this house is in a busy neighborhood.

This house is two meters wide

The neutral exterior reveals little about the unique interior of the house.

– Everything you see from the street is the long and narrow front, stained in steel, explains the architect.

If you stretch yourself, you can also see the top of the lightshows on the sides, over the roofs of nearby buildings.

Takeguchi explains that the open solution used in the interior allows the air to circulate easily around the home and helps keep the house cool in winter and cool in summer.

– The inside of the side walls has used a funnel that helps to circulate excess heat, which is both practical and energy-efficient when the weather gets colder.
