The building is supposed to reflect both tradition and future.
Architecture grabs people in different ways. We are excited, we are upset and we are indifferent. However, some buildings are still impossible to turn their backs on. They lead us into a parallel universe where revived forms and expressions are reversed. The new conference center in Dalian, China, is such a building. It looks like an extraterrestrial construction, like a UFO that has just landed and is opening its hatches so foreign beings can roll out.
“The aim was to design a building that was immediately recognizable, which places itself in the mental landscape of locals and in the international community,” the architects of Coop HImmelb (l) au.
So, no little ambition, but when you see the building it is not difficult to recognize such aspiration.
Hanging conference room
Yes, somebody lives here
Dalian is an important port city and a center for industry, tourism and trade. The city is located on the southern tip of the Liaodong Peninsula in Liaoning Province. The city is currently undergoing major changes that will change Dalian’s front over the next decade.
The building was built in accordance with the two prevailing axes of urban development, which collapse ahead of the building.
“The façade is pierced by conference rooms that almost hang out in the air, creating a multifaceted building body that creates variation in the close surroundings, describing the architects.
Controlled light emits spaciousness
The buildings consist of a clean conference center, a theater, exhibition center and part containing parking, warehousing and warehousing. All of these rooms are enveloped in a cone-shaped structure.
Water tower became nine storey detached house
“Through controlled daylight inflection, visitors experience a good space and atmosphere that varies with where they are located,” the architects formulate.
The audience and users enter a common vestibule. From there they are guided by the construction to the different rooms. The theater and conference units are located in the building, 15 meters above the entrance, according to the architects.
“The big theater, with a captain of 1600 seats and the adjacent conference center with 2,500 seats is located in the middle of the building,” explains Coop Himmelb (l) au.
Is this the world’s coolest church?
This is cosmopolitan so the theater scene can be used both as a classical stage and as a stage in a conference context.
“In this way, the use options are many, from a meeting room to a stage for classical opera, and with little grip”, the architects elaborate.
As in a pearl necklace
According to the architects, the smaller conference rooms are organized as a pearl necklace around the core of the building. This means that the distances between the different rooms and halls are small, making it easy to move from place to place. And most conference rooms and living areas get direct daylight.
“This open and organic design gives the theater and conference areas a urban character with quarter and street-like elements,” explains Coop Himmelb (l) au.
Interaction between Construction and Technology
Jordhaugen hides a unique home
The architects say that the foundation pillars of the project have been the construction and technology and the interaction between these.
The challenge was, among other things, that a large number of men would be in the building at the same time and would expect a high standard of ventilation. In addition, they would ask to meet a building with a high degree of flexible and low energy and resource consumption, “they said..
Among other things, the challenge was to provide constant fresh air into the conference areas.
“This was delivered with fresh air valves in the stairs,” explains Coop Himmelb (l) au.

And while fresh air is introduced, the used air, which is also supplied with heat from humans, is sucked out through the roof structure.
According to the architects, the construction itself is based on a structure of steel elements and frames.
“The use of new design and simulation techniques, the knowledge of local shipbuilders about how to form massive steel sheets and consumption of more than 40,000 tons has made it possible to create this construction with a steel span of more than 85 meters and extensions of just over 40 meters” , the architects conclude.
