On average, your water heater has a life span between 15 and 20 years, depending on the materials in which it is built and the quality of the water. And with a million million water heaters in Norwegian homes, it means that over 50,000 processors will be replaced every year. Perhaps one of them is yours?

It is therefore important to choose a processor that supplies the most hot water for each power circuit and which manages to maintain a satisfactory temperature in the receiver. The Swedish Energy Agency has tested water heaters and the test has been published by the Consumer Council.

The winners of the test became CTC and Hajdu. The first had the slightest heat loss of the preparation. It was best kept on the heat. Hajdu was the manufacturer who managed to produce the most hot water, indicating how quickly you get hot water in the container again if it is emptied.

Number of people in the household

Advisor to Enova Svara, Trond Paasche, emphasizes that the size of the calculator will depend on how many people will use it.

Executive Director of Norske Rørleggerbedrifters Forening (NRL), Ole Larmerud, says that the standard in most Norwegian homes is a 200-liter processor.

– All prepared have a safety valve because hot water expands up to four percent, and if water gets out of it, it must be led away. In a laundry room with extinguisher there is no problem, but in a bench it must be taken away in a different way.

– Check the water quality

When buying a new water heater, the advice from Ole Larmerud is that you should check the water quality.

– This is because water quality has an impact on the life of the processor. For example, water from wells may require a copper sheath maker.

Larmerud adds that the water temperature in the reservoir minimum should be above 65 degrees. According to the recommendations of the National Institute of Public Health, the temperature in the reservoir should be at least 70 degrees.

Varietal heat loss

One of the items tested is the heaters’ heat loss per liter of metered volume (how many liters the actual container is). Best out came CTC’s Safir 200 (which, however, does not exist in Norway).

The heat loss describes how much energy has to be supplied in order for the processor to maintain a given temperature, provided that water is not drained from it.

According to Trond Paasche, Byggforsk describes in its detail sheet 553. 163, “Energy efficient sanitary facilities”, that the annual heat loss for a 200 liter standard with standard insulation is between 1 100 and 1 250 kWh / year.

– But with foam insulation instead, the heat loss is reduced by 30%, so our recommendation is that you choose shampoo insulation, he says, adding that the heat loss will also depend on the size of the water heater.

– The larger the processor, the higher the heat loss could be. This means that a large processor with a relatively low heat loss can be a better choice than a small processor with a larger heat loss.

Heat element size

Another item the calculators were measured was their ability to heat the water. All the readers were set with the settings recommended by the supplier. The tests measured the temperature in the water as well as the actual amount of water. Then they converted this amount of water into a 40-degree equivalent. This figure was again divided by the actual amount of water. The resulting ratio gives an indication of the ability of the beakers to heat the water. “The warmer water and the higher the volume the electric water heater has, the more 40-degree water you can get out”, the Energy Agency writes on its web pages.

In this test item, Hajdu’s model Z100 ESD came out best, with a value of 1.92. The loss of the test, Tesy Base Line GCV 100 got a ratio of 1.1, indicating that the manufacturer, with recommended settings, managed to heat the water more than 40 degrees.

As Ole Larmerud says, the minimum temperature in the processor should be 65 degrees.

– When we tested all the manufacturers with the settings recommended by the supplier, we assumed that the consumer would use the default settings when using the appliance, says Martijn Jansen to the click. no. He works at the Energy Efficiency Department at the Energy Agency.

According to Trond Paasche, the effect on the heating element will affect how quickly the heater can reheat the water after use.

– A processor with twice as much power on the heater will spend half the time heating the water, therefore it will not result in greater power consumption overall. The time it takes to heat the water to the set thermostat in the appliance depends on the amount of hot water used (converted in kWh) and the size of the heating element.

About the Test

This is a Swedish test, which means, among other things, that more of the products are not found on the Norwegian market. One of the reasons is that water quality varies. In Norway, one has chosen to invest more on stainless steel water heaters, because they provide the best corrosion protection.

We have therefore chosen to pick out the readers available in the Norwegian market and we have given them Norwegian prices.

However, in two cases we have included distributors that are not available on the Norwegian market, but where the supplier has models that are almost identical. This applies to Nibe’s Compact Cu 200, which we have replaced with Compact 200. And that applies to CTC Safir 200, which has been replaced with FerroLux 200 UX.

Several of the manufacturers in the test are manufactured in enamelled steel, while in Norway stainless steel is applicable.

– An enameled processor is far less expensive to produce than a stainless steel because of the use of black steel in the enamelled. Black steel is a material that is much cheaper than stainless, explains CEO of OSO, Sigurd Braathen, to clicks. no.

– We are therefore of the opinion that in Norway there are only stainless products that function over time. This because of acidic / chloride-containing surface water, where enameled products will experience problems.

This is confirmed by Senior Advisor at SINTEF Building Research, Bjørn-Roar Krog.

Because we are getting water from lakes to a greater extent than they do in Europe, using groundwater, preparing in Norwegian homes will be more exposed to acidic water, “he said.. no.
