The architect built a private cottage with little distinction between inside and out.
It is not only Norwegians who need a cabin to escape for holidays and weekends. This small red cottage is idyllically situated in a wooded area of Quebec, Canada. The owners, a Canadian family of three, contacted the architectural office Kariouk with the wish of a cabin they could spend all year.
Contact with nature
– The family wanted a small and private retreat for weekends and holidays all year round, explains architect Paul duBellet Kariouk to Bonytt. no They would have a place they could spend the rest of their lives, and one day the daughter can take over. It was also important for them to achieve maximum contact with the beautiful scenery around the cabin.
The large windows give a sense of living in one with the woods around the cabin.
According to the architect, the area is very beautiful in winter, with excellent skiing and hiking opportunities.
In one with nature
Maybe Norway’s most beautiful cottage
The architects have divided the cabin into two parts: a private part with bedroom, bathroom and closet, and a common area with family room. The large glass windows make the contact they want with nature.
The hide above the living room is the daughter’s domain.
– To give the cottage privacy we placed it furthest on the plot where vegetation is the strongest. That way, it is unsafe even though several of the walls are glassy. The couple and the daughter together have sewn curtains throughout the cabin.
Easy to maintain
The cabin has continuous floor heating and an efficient fireplace that provides good warmth so that the cabin can be used all year.
This cabin never needs to beiss
The cabin owners also wanted the cabin to be easy to maintain and not too expensive. Based on the chosen architects, affordable and maintenance-free materials such as cement and concrete.
A family graphic artist has made a “quilt” of copper and zinc platters in the ceiling above the entrance.
– I chose the red color on the exterior, explains the architect. The family first considered a coke-gray color, but it made the cabin look like a panther ship. I chose red since it reminds of the traditional barns in the area.
The owners have stood for the decor of the cabin, with the exception of the oval dining table and the lighting in the hallway. These were indeed a parting gift from the architect, which he himself made.
– When the project was nearing the end, I had no place to live, as there were delays with the renovation of my own apartment. The customers, who also became good friends, made me living in the cabin while my home was finished, Kariouk concludes.
