Find the right snowmobile

We give you an overview of snowmobiles on the market.

Find the right snowmobile

Strength / charge

Do not look blind to the number of horsepower. It does not always give a good picture of the capacity of the machine. Casting length may give an indication of the engine power. Check more retailers before deciding.

Advice for snowmobile purchase

  • Find out what needs you have. How big is the plot? What should be cleaned? How much snow does it tend to come? This can help you answer which snowmobile is right for you.
  • Is there a minimum of snow, eight to ten centimeters, can you handle an entry-level engine and small engine.
  • You should consider whether you need belt drive or wheel drive. A wheel drive model balances the snow chassis around the machine’s wheel axle and will look up and out of the snow when the resistance in the front increases. A belt-mounted model stays along the ground despite high resistance in the front, thus requiring less power when driving. Here you may want to try out different models.
  • Consider the working width, but remember that a large and wide snow house in combination with a weak engine will be a bad choice. The width varies on the different models from around 50 centimeters up to 80 centimeters. If you are a first time buyer, it is recommended that you speak with a neighbor or retailer. Ask for a demonstration and get them to analyze your need.

In today’s market you can find many different types of mills. But regardless of brand, there are essentially two types of milling mechanisms in the trade; entry-levelers and two-stage readers.

The first variant sheds the snow at the same time as it is milled, while the two-stage model feeds the snow through a slow feed screw, then throwing it out with a fast-moving draft fan. The engine capacity and work width of entrancesrowers are far less than for a two-stage engineer.

– The small entrances are best suited where there is little snow, such as in the city. They usually have small engines, small wheels and are without propulsion system. At cabins where a lot of snow is expected, you should definitely choose a two-stage ferry. These are machines with engine sizes from five horsepower and upwards. The machines also have a good working width, “says Ivar Rølles, Product Manager at Berema (Honda).

– I always recommend fresher with hydrostatic drive, a stepless speed control that makes the use far easier for drivers, he continues..

Get information

Are you the first time buyer, he recommends that you talk to a neighbor who has a fresher he is happy with. You should also contact a specialist dealer for a demonstration.

– It often tells a lot more than all the world’s brochures. I think you will find that you will not want to buy the cheapest model on the market. Price and quality are closely linked, he says.

Price and Quality

Rølles receives support from Ståle Myrvang, Sales Manager at Hako Ground & Garden, which leads the brand Toro.

– Some prices on snowmobiles are too good to be true, and so it is. You can of course get a good deal on a quality free, but usually reflect price quality. However, it may be wise to be on guard against overpricing, emphasizes Myrvang.

– You buy a snowmobile to get rid of a problem, but so many people get a product that becomes an annoyance. The problem is clearly greatest when the snow is wet. The ejector can seal and it takes forever to finish the milling process. The gearbox on the feeder varies greatly in quality. If this is bad, it will rub bouncers only the fresher will come into contact with a hard snow bump. Few things are more annoying than having to stand up and swap breaking bolts every ten meters.
