Choice of qualification, apartment or detached house? The starting point for this house was the desire to move in an apartment, but an architect’s mind started with the home owner.

– The house is designed for a friend who needed new housing. He considered buying an apartment, but we thought that it would be more fun to build, “says architect Kristoffer Øyen in the architect firm Lie Øyen..

The starting point was that it would be cheap and the first plans went on a single room with double height where you could later build a floor plan.

Compact housing

The house, located in Drøbak, has got an elongate shape, built of concrete elements that are almost assembled as pieces in a jigsaw puzzle. It creates a compact and so-called form expression, but it still warmed the jury in the Concrete Award for 2014, which gave it the first spot and stated, among other things: “Villa Tussefaret is a unique and innovative property that challenges the conventional detached house through its facade expressions, its flexible floor plan and innovative interior solutions. The home is clearly thoughtfully and consistently carried out, from facade expressions to the small details of the interior ».

The apartment is on two levels, with a surface area of 60 square meters in each. Within this volume there have been space for four bedrooms, two bathrooms and two living rooms (with kitchen). This is divided into a main house and a rental property.

OPEN: Originally, the idea was that the house should consist of a single room, but it was changed along the way. Nevertheless, the residence has been given an open room solution, which is enhanced by the use of large windows. Photo: Nils Petter Dale

Concrete shell

The building was chosen built in concrete because it should be a reasonable house, with simple materials and surfaces that did not require maintenance. Some of the items were so big that they were on the verge of what was possible to transport. It nevertheless gave a time gain.

Even the angle of the roof is customized for a particular purpose

– Using elements, the raw structure could be ready for use quickly, and it was a desire to express the elements in single pieces that are assembled and resting on each other, “explains Øyen..

– The house became a bit more conventional eventually, but the idea of ”the great baldness” is still there.

Glass, aluminum and concrete

The asymmetric concrete elements create movements in the otherwise tight form expression, and the position of the windows and the doors in the junctions between each element enhances the impression of asymmetry.

In this house the wood stove is only used once in the last five years

Both doors and windows are made of raw aluminum, which emphasizes the character of the house and expands the implemented and simple matrix usage.

– Thus, the entire facade expression is created with three materials; glass, aluminum and concrete elements, deepens the eye.

INDUSTRIAL: The use of steel and netting and simple light sources reinforces the industrial embossed concrete. The decor in oak veneer was deliberately used to balance the industrial feel. Photo: Fin Serck-Hanssen

Wanted a refined interior

In the interior, the cold concrete shell is balanced by using materials that are more refined than the gray and cool concrete walls.

This is how you have not seen a sauna before

Therefore, we ended up using oak-fired binder veneer in parts of the decor, and the interior with its precise design and high degree of detail creates an experience of something beautiful and safe, in contrast to the rough and robust concrete divide between indoor and outdoor environments, explains Eye.

The two floors are internally coupled with space zones, which are further divided using solid oak veneer furniture built by the architect’s own carpenters. The function of furniture can be changed as the age and composition of the family members change.

The concrete elements are pulled up and above the internal ceiling, so that a sheltered roof terrace has been obtained.
