Clamped two houses into a crack

In the narrow alley, the architects got room for not just one but two houses.

There are rifts about the sites in cities around the world. And when many people live in small space, one has to think alternatively and see solutions where others do not even see opportunities.

One of the solutions to space shortages in towns is to exploit the rooms between other buildings and townhouses, so-called landfill architecture. In larger cities, where land use is extreme, examples of houses that are well functioning on small plots still appear..

Filled a hole in the street

When the client came to architect Raimondo Guidacci with the desire to create a home on a recessed plot in a street that was otherwise filled with ancient urbanization, according to the design and architectural site Arch Daily, the solution was to throw tradition out of the window and think Completely new.

In the town of Orsara in Italy, Maria Ruscito had found the dream space of her new home. The problem was just the place. And the surroundings.

– The site where the client wanted to build his new home was not just slim and difficult, explains architect Guidacci to the site.

But it was also a challenge that she wanted a modern and unique home amidst old and traditional urbanization.

The solution the architect came up with ended up wondering many – even the client himself.

– The gap between the buildings stretched from one street on one side and across to the street on the opposite side, explains Guidacci.

– Should we have built a house to fill this long and narrow void, the result would be a dark house with minimal access to daylight.

The solution became two houses, one of which opens towards the street on one side, the other towards the street on the opposite side.

– In this way we could accommodate a gap between the houses, inside the alley, explains the architect.

– It’s open right up, thus giving sunlight the opportunity to penetrate and make both houses benefit from more light and air.

The 125m2 plot is located in the heart of Orsara’s oldest district.

My client was very concerned that her new home should be modern, explains Guidacci.

– So it was not a goal for us to create buildings that would match and fit in with the architecture and building around.

The result was full-scale building – which contrasts strongly with the old stone building around.

The street where the modern residential building is located has homes of different age and architecture.

– We felt that a modern house, with elements of white lime, oak and steel, would pop out and at the same time fit in, explains the architect.

– Contraster also helps to emphasize not only the house itself but also the buildings around.

Inspired by geometry

According to the architect, the front of both houses can be related to each other, but are also different in design and design.

– At the house facing the street Via Trento, the walls are completely white, without windows, while on the side of the house facing the street on the other side, Via Cadorna, we have put on two balconies in brushed steel, explaining Guidacci.

This house is built as a village

The architect admits having been inspired by geometry in terms of design and layout in the two houses.

– The buildings follow the same lines, so in many ways “talking to each other,” explains Guidacci.

– This was also the goal when we ended up with the solution with two different buildings.

The floors rotate around the center of the houses, which is the pipe.

– In this way, the house’s floor plan works as a fan, explains the architect.

– And generates several terraces facing inward, toward the cavity between the two houses.

The project took a full 5 years to complete.

– Results became a unique home for the client, explains Guidacci.

– But also a home that works, both on the site it is built on and the way the client wants to live.
