There are many exciting architecture projects coming from Japan.

The architects in Koji Tsutsui Architect & Associates won the World Building of the Year in the Home Housing category in 2011.

In the same competition, the architects at Snøhetta won the World Building of the Year Award in the Visitor Center category.

This house is located north of Japan in a small town in Hokkaido with a population of approximately 7000. Here the forest industry has been widespread, but the area has experienced migration in recent years. The house is therefore in a city where housing density is low compared to the Japanese metropolitan areas.

The detached house is built for a single couple of architects, Jun Igarashi Architects. It is approximately 112 square meters and has a plot of around 1.4 goals. The relatively large plot has made it possible to test a somewhat unusual floor plan. The house can be described as a kind of cluster house, composed of several box-like volumes. A unique architecture you rarely see in Scandinavia.

Shielded and Free

The residents wanted a sheltered house on a flat. They also got a house with many interesting space effects. The highest room is the living room and has a ceiling height of 10 meters, from which the rooms are lower as it grows beyond. This creates different crutches and hooks and opens up to the facade of the house both for sun and shade.

President Kim Skaara of the Norwegian Architectural Association (NAL) thinks it is a good idea and believes the house can give some exciting space effects inside, but argues that it is so complicated.

Keep it simple

KEEP IT SIMPLE: A nice touch with interesting space effects, but it becomes too complicated, asks President Kim Skaara in the Norwegian Association of Country Architects. Photo: Iwan Job / Jun Igarashi Architects

– It seems that the solution involves unnecessary amount of exterior surfaces, which is not exactly energy-friendly design. All escalations, both horizontally and vertically, give many vulnerable details, which hardly stand out over time. Moreover, the outside spaces between the wings seem useless, but Skaara has not been there physically. Nevertheless; The simple is often the best is Skaara’s message.

What do you think about the home? Could you live in such a house? Please share the comments below.
