Although the garage is basically the home of the car, someone chooses to rebuild it for other purposes. Some make inspiring homes while others make a practical home office.

The Fabre / DeMarien Architectes architects have just done that with a wrecked garage in Bordeaux, France. The old garage has become a modern family residence of 210 square meters. Only parts of the old facade facing the street remain.

The house itself is built behind the old fa├žade, so that the area between the housing and the facade has become a functional courtyard with space to park two cars.

– To utilize and customize the property as best as possible, we chose to use steel constructions, explains Jennifer Dooner from Fabre / DeMarien Architectes to Bonytt. no

Dropped garage became fat apartment

The first floor consists of an entrance, bathroom and bedroom. High stone walls hide the view of the courtyard.

– On the first floor there is a maze of rooms and passengers, says Dooner. A cozy and intimate patio is hidden behind the walls.

The large staircase up to the second floor is illuminated by a skylight that makes the dwelling seem bigger. On the second floor there is an open-plan living space of 100 square meters, with access to a south-facing balcony.

The frontage of the old garage hides the house so it is not visible from the road.

– We have used the same materials inside and outside, explains the architect. The materials consist largely of steel, black concrete, aluminum and black enameled cobblestone.

Steel structures and the framework are visible, which gives the housing a rugged and industrial feel. The concrete floor, doors and window frames are colored black, while all internal walls are white and neutral. Light fixtures, furniture and art also have an answer and white theme.

– Black is a classic color that gives a tough expression without being overwhelming, emphasizes the architect. A black garment becomes like the little black dress, elegant and minimalist.
